What Is 3D Printing?

3D printing in its simplest form, is a manufacturing process that involves layering material to create a 3-dimensional object. This is an additive method, which is different from subtractive processes in which materials are cut, drilled or milled. While 3D printers use a variety of materials (such as plastic or metal) and methods (see "How does 3D Printing Work?" They share the ability to convert digital files that contain three-dimensional data, regardless of whether they were created with a computer-aided design program (CAD) or a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) program or a 3D scanner, into physical objects.
